JOHOR BARU, May 17 ─ Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today criticised the move to allow Singaporeans to buy land in the Iskandar Development Region.
He said the rich Singaporeans would eventually displace the Malays who would then have to move to the “fringes of the forest or even the forest itself.”
"Eventually, Iskandar will be filled with all sorts of people, except the Malays who will become a minority, just like the Malays in Singapore.
"Without land, how are we going to claim our sovereignty?" he asked at a post-election Umno forum organised by the Badan-badan Bertindak Gabungan Ahli-Ahli Umno Akar Umbi Johor in Johor Baru today.
Ex-Backbenchers Club president Datuk Rohanie Ahmad, who was one of the speakers at the forum, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had failed to understand the geo-political strategic importance of the crooked bridge project, and had let down the Malays when he cancelled the project
The high number of spoilt votes in the March general election in Johor (over 322,400 votes) must be taken as protest votes against the PM's decision, said Rohanie.
He claimed the IDR would bring no direct benefit to Johor, serving only to extend Singapore's geo-political influence into the mainland.
“By buying up strategic land in the IDR, Singapore can exert greater economic control and dominance over Malaysia, and the Malays and Umno, in particular.
“This strategic issue of great political significance has been brushed aside by Pak Lah's administration.
“The IDR is not the brainchild of the PM. The concept came from people who had worked or studied in Singapore.“The Malays should not support the IDR. Why should we create avenues for Singapore to strength its economic influence and hold over Johor. We must do everything possible to oppose and stop this project. Instead, we should push for the building of the bridge,” said Rohanie.
